Please meet my new girlfriend (PIC HEAVY)

Hello again, lovelies! I said I would have a new post up and it's a bit later than I thought it would be, but at least it's here!

I ordered a ring from Tracey of Ginger Kitty Designs during her Valentine's day special (free shipping - something all Canadians have to take advantage of because international shipping really sucks sometimes!) and I got it today. And let me tell you, the other nail mail I got laid on my bed while I walked around with/snapped pictures of me with this beautiful lady. I'm not joking. I put aside bottles of nail polish for this ring. Wanna see why?

I got the Liquid Euphoria ring because it's gorgeoussssssss. I knew I had to have it the second I saw it. There are going to be a lot of pictures but she has a lot of personalities and I tried to capture them all!

Holy shit. *Mops up drool*

You can check Tracey's designs out here. She's also pretty awesomely active on twitter, so you should follow her there too! Just click here. And if you haven't seen it already, sayanythingbr00ke, one of my favourite youtube gurus EVER (I love her nails so much haha) did a review of some of Tracey's jewelry!

You need at least one piece of Tracey's jewelry. Seriously. It's a dream come true for a lacquerhead!

Take it off, giiiiiiiiiiiiirl! SEXY CHALLENGE?

Hello lacquered lovelies! If today's title didn't creep you out, let me explain (and express my disappointment that you weren't creeped out). For today's post, I want to issue a challenge to all of you lovelies!

For this mani, I used China Glaze Recycle and then stamped with my own franken creation, which was just white with about three drops of OPI Funky Dunky mixed in. This mani was inspired (it's not exact but I love how this came out!) by... wait for it!

Underwear! That's my challenge to you all. Make a mani inspired by lingerie :) I can't wait to see what the more talented among you come up with. I was going to try the fishnet pattern next but then I realized that that one would probably kill me with difficulty!

I apologize for these pics... I tried to do a quick colour adjust because my hands were really weirdly red but it wasn't happening and I have to go out and take pictures with my new girlfriend because OMG. She arrived today and she is flipping gorgeous! That post should be up in about half an hour! Anyway, here's what mine came out like!

Awww yeah underwear? Excuse the tipwear, I've only been wearing this two days but I worked yesterday, and we all know how that destroys my manis. :(

What do you think? Will you partake? Please partake, I think it could be really fun!

I will be writing again very soon, lovelies! Thanks for stopping by!

27 February 2011

Hello lacquered lovelies! For joint post Sunday, Nicole and I have some swatches for you. We got our greedy little hands on the China Glaze crackle collection! We were both super excited about this collection and I still think it's awesome, I just need a bit of tweaking to get the hang of it, I think. My third swatch turned out best, so I'll show you that one last. And yes, I did cut my nails. I was so sick of my stupid ring finger nubbin that I chose to start over. My nails aren't really "short" to most people but I think they are. :( I decided to go for it and start with the square shape too, so there are going to be a lot of "in transition" pictures coming up! Bah!

First up, is Broken Hearted, the pink crackle. I used Color Club Almost Famous as my base. I'm not keen on Almost Famous, it's streaky and... well, yellow. So yeah. I had some issues here, I got weird dragging. I think because it took three coats for AF to get the colour I wanted (I should've layered it over white) and it didn't play nicely with the topcoat that I chose.

That's the nail that crackled the way I wanted it to, anyway. Sadly, I swiftly forgot what I did to get that to happen, so... yeah.

I wanted to use a really contrasting colour again, so I chose China Glaze Bing Cherry, which is actually pretty nice. For a red, I quite like it.
Sadly, I couldn't get the hang of Crushed Candy either. It sort of worked the way I wanted it to on my pinky but I will sort this one out because I love it! I have to keep the little crackle tag on it, though, it looks exactly the same as For Audrey in the bottle!

Again, I think my pinky nail crackled the best.

Here's the one that I liked most! I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Lacey Lilac as the base, then Cracked Concrete over top.

Bah! I love this picture except for that stupid white hair! I hate those damn "lint free" wipes, they're never lint free at all. :( The hair was so tiny that I couldn't even see it on my camera screen but now I see it, so frustrating!

All of these pictures have the polishes as they are on the pointer and middle fingers and a topcoat on the ring and pinky. I'll keep you guys updated on how my quest to use these properly goes. I'm going to keep trying until it works the way I want it to!

My post on Monday will have a challenge for you all... I thought it would be a fun thing to ask people to do and a little way to brighten our days up a bit/give us some inspiration. It does involve unmentionables but psh, we're all grown ups here!

Nicole's turn!

I got to do the other three from the crackle collection. For all of my pictures I wore a topcoat on my index and ring fingers, and the polishes were left matte on the middle and pinkie.

First up is Fault Line, which is the purple shimmer. Here I have it layered over Color Club Pretty in Platinum, which I'd put on the night before in preparation for going to Kirsten's house (God forbid I ride the bus with bare nails!). Fault Line doesn't really give the wide cracks and random chunks that I love the most, but I'm willing to overlook that because it's a friggen purple shimmah shimmah! I applied a very thin coat, and you can see that some nails crackled better than others.

But most didn't crack much at all. Boo hiss boo.

Next is Black Mesh over China Glaze Adore. Please ignore the state of my ring finger. I have a wee little hangnail on that finger that didn't take too kindly to the acetone cleanup.

Anyway, Black Mesh is a lot like OPI Black Shatter. It goes on a lot more thinly than Black Shatter though, I found.

One thing that I really like about this versus Black Shatter is that it didn't get all gloopy and messy in the bottle and on the brush. Am I the only one that finds that after doing a full manicure with Black Shatter my bottle is a complete mess of polish? I can't be the only one with this problem.

Last up is Lightning Bolt, which I layered over China Glaze Awaken. Urgh. I dunno if it was just me, but I had serious issues with this polish. I waited until the polish underneath it was completely dry before I put it on, and it still barely crackled at all. I know other people have had much better luck with this one, so I probably just need to play around with it a little bit more.

Yeah. I'm not sure what else to say about this one. I need to practice with it. I have ideas for this one, but they won't work out if I can't get it to behave the way it's supposed to.

In the end, these polishes all have the potential to be really awesome, they're just going to take a bit of tweaking and a lot of trial and error.

Which one do you like best? Do you have any tips and tricks for any of the ones that we had problems with?

25 February 2011

Pretty sure I loathe this.

Hi lacquered lovelies! Super fast post as I'm going to be rushing out the door to meet Nicole. This is a super girly mani I was sporting yesterday... I'm sick of winter!

This is two coats of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Tickled Pink, a nice pink with gold shimmer. On my ring fingers I added a coat of Sinful Colors Pinky Glitter, which is everything I wanted Teenage Dream to be. I added a ton of topcoat and then stamped all my nails with some flowers from a BM plate.

Ugh! This is super girly and not like me at all. I only did this because it was Wednesday and we wear pink on Wednesdays! Jasmine, Elizabeth and I have decided to try Mean Girls inspired mania and while this isn't my submission, I think it's loathsome enough to be! Girly manis and I do not play nicely together. I feel much better about my mani today, China Glaze Ingrid. I love when my nails look like sparkly baby shit, guys. Seriously. Ingrid is gorgeous.

That's all for today. Do you hate this as much as I do? Have you ever done a mani that you completely hate?

Mysterious Skies

Another attempt at a cheeky title! It could also apply to the bizarre weather conditions from yesterday. If you missed Kirsten's post and tweeting yesterday, our little city known for its mild winters was hit with some insane amounts of snow. Not insane by other parts of Canada, but really insane for here.

Anyway, on to the polish!

For a base, I used one of the most gorgeous purple polishes I think I own. It's another one of the inexpensive Icing polishes, Mysterious. It's a bit more vibrant in person than in the pictures, it's the colour I think of when I imagine the perfect purple. It's got a little bit of blue shimmer running through it to help cool it down, but mostly it's just a straight-up purple.

I used three coats to get complete opacity, and the polish dried pretty quickly in between coats.

I thought I had done an excellent job cleaning up after this one, but these pictures are telling me otherwise. Sorry! I also apologize for the smudges of polish over the stars, those showed up when I was moving the stars around with a toothpick. The smudges weren't very noticeable IRL, but it's already quite clear that the macro setting on my camera wants to make me look like a fool.

Anyway. The stars are from a bottle of polish from a brand called Paris Memories that I got at the Dollar Giant, costing me a whopping $1.25. It's a clear base with those star-shaped things (I'm reluctant to call them glitter, because they aren't terribly sparkly), as well as some little pieces of iridescent glitter.

My best guess as to what it's called is 781, but I really don't know.

The star polish was quite thick and gloopy for me, but I wasn't too worried because I was only going to be using a little bit of it. I ended up just putting little blobs of it on my nails with the stars, and then smoothing it out as best I could before slapping a topcoat on.

When I got the star polish, I also picked up a that was exactly the same, but with red stars instead of blue. I don't know what I'm going to use it with, but I'd love to hear some suggestions!

Have you ever found any really cool polishes at a dollar store?

Also, if you haven't done so already, be sure to check out and enter our giveaway!

Sinful Colors Daddy's Girl + something horrifying!

Hello lacquered lovelies! Today I have a lovely polish for you. It's snowing here today (which is unusual - I know, I know, all of Canada is covered in snow, right? How else would we make our igloos?!) so I'm feeling pretty bleh. All the places I've lived in have been really snowy and I moved here partly to get away from that, I have terrible luck sometimes! Also, just wanted to say quickly that I hope Jen feels better soon, she's got a killer headache. Send her good vibes!

Anyway, this is Sinful Colors Daddy's Girl. I got this (and Fiji) from my parents this weekend when I went to see them in Vancouver. Vancouver was amazing (and horrifying at times), and I have one scary picture to share after. Not for the faint of heart! Daddy's Girl is a gorgeous purple jelly with gold flakies/glitter in it. I was seriously fascinated by my nails. I kept holding them up to my parents and saying, "Look how squishy! LOOK AT THEM!"

I'd wanted this polish for a while, not that my parents knew that... I don't think? So it's super cool that they got it for me! Fiji is gorgeous too, but I don't have a swatch of it on its own. I loved this polish so much that I actually wore it for a whole weekend - Friday night to Monday afternoon, actually. I had some shrinking issues (curse you, Seche Vite, I just try over and over and this is how I get repaid) but I couldn't bear to take this off, so I added another coat and wrapped my tips. I seriously never do that. Especially not when I brought 10 other polishes with me! (What? I didn't know what I would feel like wearing!)

These pictures are with one coat of Fiji (just to lessen the coats of DG), two coats of Daddy's Girl and Seche Vite. This isn't the bottle colour, it's still a bit darker yet, but I think it's gorgeous! Just a warning, though... my swatches are crap. I'm going to revisit this one at some point because it deserves WAY better than what my sleep-deprived, hopped up on coffee brain did for it.

Boo! Look at that shrinkage! This was the next morning too... I wish I had taken some pictures after I wrapped my tips. Anyway, let me take your mind off of that by showing you something horrifying instead!

While I was in Vancouver, we went to Granville Island, because I might have a teeny obsession with living on a houseboat someday. I don't know why, I just really want to. We went into this cool market, and as we were getting ready to leave we walked past the seafood counter and my eyes fell on this. It was horrifying and I definitely felt a bit nauseous. EWWW.

That's all for today, lovelies! I need to stop posting purples lately, they're so not me!

Have a beautiful day!

75 follower giveaway! ****CLOSED****

We said we would give away the China Glaze crackle collection when we reached 75 followers, and we're absolutely going to deliver on that promise!

We value every single one of our followers, and we're totally stoked on this collection so it seems fitting that we would choose to give it away for a milestone such as this.

KIRSTEN INTERRUPTION? Oh heyyyyy girrrrrrrrrrrrl! Nicole and I are so super excited about this. We never thought we would have any followers... well, at all, really, besides our real life friends. I figured the ones who follow my rant blog would be the only ones who followed us on here. And that they were following just to be supportive because they actually didn't care. But there are now 75 of you and that's amazing. We are so thankful for every single one of you. Your comments and tweets (I've turned into a twitter monster because of the nail blogging world - seriously), advice, help, all of it, everything you guys do, means the world to us. I'm not kidding. Also, in addition (totally typed "addiction" first - we're all crack addicts here so that's okay, right?) to the Crackle collection, I'm going to throw in a couple of my favourite nail care products because they're amaaaaazing! That bit isn't as exciting as the crackles, though, so let's get to it!

(We'll just use this picture for now, the polishes we ordered for the giveaway haven't exactly arrived yet. When they do arrive, we'll plonk a picture of them in here.)

The Crackle Glaze collection consists of 6 crackle polishes:
- Lighting Bolt (white)
- Cracked Concrete (grey)
- Black Mesh (black)
- Crushed Candy (light blue-green, like For Audrey)
- Broken Hearted (darkish pink)
- Fault Line (purple shimmer)

The giveaway will be open internationally and will run until March 23rd. Once we've used some sort of random draw to pick a winner, we will notify them via email. The winner will then have 48 hours to respond to the email (if you think this will be a problem for you for any reason, let us know in advance). If they don't, we'll pick someone else.

How to enter:
Be a follower on Google Friend Connect and input your username and email address into the little entry form below. New followers are welcome!

Shattered Harmony

Clearly I'm not very good at coming up with creative names for my manicures. I'll leave that up to the professionals. I was also toying with "Discord" as a title, but I thought that might be a little too dorky.

Anyhow. As you may have gathered from the name, the base of this manicure is two coats of China Glaze Harmony, which I absolutely love. At some point I want to get a few other polishes from the Romantique collection because they're all so shimmery and wonderful and GREAT for Konad stamping. This is the stamping polish that I used in my first Konad post, in case it looks a bit familiar.

Harmony is a chromey light purple with a hell of a lot of pink in it. It's very nearly a one-coater (which is why it works so well for stamping), but I had few little bald spots so I went over with a second. It applied very easily, and dried in a decent amount of time. I don't know if it dried faster than usual, but it didn't take ages and ages.

Harmony smells a bit weird as far as nail polish goes. If you're expecting the usual nail polish smell, you may be a bit surprised when you first open up this bottle. Or mine, at least. It smells a lot like those dry-erase pens for whiteboards. I don't really mind though, I'm all about the chemical smells.

I'm probably going to be wearing Black Shatter or lumpy glitter polishes a fair amount in the next little while. I have a little tear on the nail of my middle finger, and just fixing it with a teabag wasn't quite cutting it. Instead of filing my nail all the way down to the tear (it would be insanely short and painful), I used my acrylic kit and made a little patch. I filed it down, but it's still a bit bumpy and I would be incredibly conscious of it if I didn't try and disguise it somehow.

You may have noticed that the Black Shatter looks a little different, and that's because I applied it sideways to see how it would turn out. Kirsten tried it on the weekend and said it looked a bit like zebra stripes, so I had to give it a shot!

Do you like the way Shatter looks when applied sideways? What are some other techniques that you use to make it look interesting?

Savvy Chocolate

Hello lacquered lovelies. I'm back from Vancouver, yay! I had a good trip. No nail polish hauls to show but I was with the family, it would be totally cruel to bring them along with me when I go hunting!

Today, I have another brown for you. I don't know why I love brown nail polish so much but it could actually overtake my green obsession. Potentially. Some day. Maybe.

This is Savvy Chocolate. In most lights, it looks black.

It really comes alive in the sunlight, though.

I don't know where that random white hair came from...?

This picture shows something that really bugs meeeee. I didn't wrap my tips because I was only going to wear this for a day but LOOK AT THAT SHRINKAGE. I keep trying to give Seche Vite another chance and this is how it keeps repaying me. Rage.

Also... tacked onto Wednesday's post will be some trip pictures and a water marble fail. So look forward to that! I want to start showing my fails because sometimes they're hilarious!

I think this colour is gorgeous. What do you think?

Random Sunday Hodgepodge!

This week for our Sunday post, we're going to be covering two different subjects. The first subject is going to be Nicole's long overdue "7 Things" post. If you're not interested in that, you should still stick around to read the second bit, because it will most likely interest you quite a bit.

So, without further ado, Nicole's 7 Things.

Back at the beginning of the month, Cristina tagged us in one of these things, and this is my response. It has to be said that almost all of the things Kirsten said in her tag apply to me as well because we are scarily similar in many ways.

7 things I have to do before I die:
1. Own a munchkin cat. And a toyger. Seriously. If they could be cross-bred so that I could have a miniature tiger with stubby legs, my life would be made.
2. Go back to Paris for an extended period of time. I've been there twice, but neither trip was really long enough for me to properly do everything I needed to do. I could literally spend days wandering through the Louvre.
3. Learn to drive and actually get a proper license. Well, I know how to drive, I'm just really not very good at it and I get all panicked and angry when I'm behind the wheel.
4. Wear all of the polishes in my collection at least once.
5. Learn to drive motorcycles. This is sort of related to number 3, but in my head it's completely separate. While traveling through Vietnam in 2009, I completely fell in love with riding motorcycles, and I told myself that when I got home, I was going to get a motorcycle license so I could do it all the time. It hasn't happened yet.
6. Get a job that I actually enjoy. As of right now I'd settle for just getting a job that gives me money, but the ultimate goal is for a job that doesn't make me want to die during each shift.
7. Become best friends with the Spice Girls.

7 things I say all the time:
1. Crap
2. Oh no
3. Balls
4. Boourns
5. Jerk.
6. Old man knees
7. So sleepy

7 things I'm good at:
1. Reading
2. Citing papers (the picky little details are what I'm best at).
3. Alphabetizing things/filing
4. Doing my homework at the last minute
5. Spending money, especially money I don't have.
6. Absorbing information that most people would consider to be useless, such as obscure facts and plot points in the Harry Potter books.
7. Walking

7 flaws:
1. Too easily distracted from the important things
2. I can be a bit of a flake sometimes, but I'm working on fixing that.
3. I'm awful at time management; I tell myself every year that I'm going to start working on my assignments a little bit each day so that I'm not panicking at the last minute, but it hasn't happened yet.
4. I'm too good at spending money I don't have.
5. My skin still thinks I'm a teenager.
6. It's way too easy for me to spend an entire day watching movies and TV in my jammies.
7. I can't watch even a slightly scary movie without being terrified of everything for days afterward. I mean, I love horror movies, but I'd love to be able to watch them and then be able to walk at a normal pace through my basement instead of sprinting.

7 qualities:
1. Kirsten put this one under her flaws, but I'm going to put it here because... well, just because.  I'm definitely a loner. If I have a choice between going out to a bar with friends or sitting at home with my cat all night, I'll probably choose to stay in with my cat. I love my friends, but I don't like being surrounded by lots and lots of people. My favourite kind of parties are the kind where there are only about 5 people, and we just play board games and listen to music. And drink.
2. I'm very loyal. Once you've got me on your side, you'll be hard pressed to get rid of me. I'm not exactly going to go out and beat people up for you, but you'll always have my love and support.
3. I'm a pacifist. I firmly believe that there are better ways of solving disputes that don't involve bloodshed or violence of any kind. I absolutely support the military in what they do to protect me, but I live in hope that a time will come when they won't be necessary.
4. I cry out of sympathy when I see other people cry a lot of the time.
5. I'm a very hard worker in anything that I'm tasked with. Even if I'm completely miserable about what I have to do, you can rest assured that I'm going to do my best at it.
6. Tied in to my loyalty, I can be very forgiving. To me, almost no bridge can be burned completely. Almost.
7. I know when I've had enough to drink and I'm good at stopping at that point. For that reason I've only had one serious hangover in my entire life. And oh man was it serious.

I'm not going to tag anyone in this because the three people that Kirsten picked were the exact three that I would have picked, and I can't bring myself to choose any others. If you
want to fill it out yourself, go right ahead and feel free to leave a link to that post in the comments. I'd love to read what you have to say!

And now, the bit you've been waiting for.

Kirsten and I have spent a long time discussing this, and we've decided we're going to have a giveaway in the near future. When we hit 75 followers, we're going to give away...

The entire China Glaze crackle collection! Yay!

We've still got a few more to go before we get to 75, but hopefully it'll be pretty soon! If you want to mention the upcoming giveaway on your blog or Twitter or whatever, go right ahead. The sooner we get 75 followers, the sooner we'll start accepting entries.

STOP, Kirsten time? Hi lacquered lovelies. I'm typing this on my phone, so I won't be as verbose as I usually am. You can breathe a sigh of relief now. We're just excited about the crackles and we're looking forward to the chance to show that we appreciate you all! I'm still in Vancouver, not much luck hunting but I'm having fun. I have ice cream, so life is beautiful. Posts will resume as usual tomorrow! Until then, just remember that I have a big fat LESBIAN crush on all of you. bonus points to whoever gets that reference that isn't my roommate!

We hit 55 today and it's pretty awesome. Thank all of you for reading our little blog!
